Pattern

A good pattern picture has a repeating rhythm set up by elements in the pictue and then one of the objects breaks the pattern. In this excellent picture by Mark Duncan, the picture is really all pattern. The heads of the Scouts are a pattern but the dominant pattern is carried by the flags. All are in unison–except for the single flag carried higher. That flag breaks the pattern.

As you become more astute as really seeing what is in your environment, look for patterns that have some element breaking the pattern. They are all around you. You just have to look for them and compose them in the frame of your viewfinder.
